Short answer

Of the Dyson models below, only the DC33 has a drive belt in the usual sense: the main motor turns the brush bar through a belt and a clutch. Every other model drives its brush bar with a separate motor in the cleaner head, and Dyson does not sell a belt for any of them. Some corded heads (DC25, DC41, DC65) have a small toothed belt sealed inside the head. Dyson's fix for those is a new brush bar or cleaner head, not a belt.

People ask this because older vacuums, and most Hoover, Shark and Bissell uprights, have a rubber belt you swap every year or so. Dyson moved away from that design after the DC33. On a newer Dyson a brush bar that stops spinning is almost never a snapped belt: the head usually needs a reset, has something wrapped round it, or has failed.

Belt or no belt, by Dyson model

ModelBelt? What drives the brush barIf the brush bar stops
Dyson DC33 Belt: Yes The main motor drives the brush bar through a belt and a clutch. The clutch switch on the cleaner head turns the bar on and off. Recline the machine, make sure the clutch is on and clear the head. If the bar still won't spin, Dyson's own online check says to take off the soleplate and look at the belt. Dyson US no longer sells the belt or clutch; independent parts shops do.

Dyson DC25 Belt: Inside the head A motor in the cleaner head turns the brush bar through a short toothed belt inside the head. There is no clutch; the brush bar button switches it. Clear the bar and follow the brush bar reset in the manual. Dyson no longer lists a head or belt for the DC25; the inner belt is sold only by independent parts shops.

Dyson DC40 Belt: No A motor in the cleaner head. Some later DC40s are reported to have a small belt sealed inside the head; Dyson lists no belt. Run the reset shown in the manual and clear the head; if it still won't spin, Dyson support. The only head spare Dyson lists is the soleplate.

Dyson DC41 Belt: Inside the head A motor in the cleaner head, with a small toothed belt inside the sealed head gearbox. Press the brush bar button twice, or switch the machine off and on, to reset it, then clear the head. If it still won't spin, Dyson replaces the cleaner head (920774-01). A UK parts shop sells the inner belt but warns that a stopped bar is rarely the belt.

Dyson DC65 Belt: Inside the head A motor in the cleaner head, built like the DC41's, with a small toothed belt sealed inside the head. Reset (press the button twice, or switch off and on) and clear the head. Dyson's spare is the brush bar (966098-01), not a belt.

If the brush bar stopped spinning

  1. Switch off and unplug (or take the cordless machine off charge).
  2. Reset it. On the DC41, DC50, DC65 and Ball Animal models, press the brush bar button twice or switch the machine off and on. The bar stops itself when something jams it.
  3. Clear the head. Cut away hair and string, open the end cap where there is one, and check for anything wedged under the soleplate.
  4. On a DC33 make sure the clutch is switched on, then check the belt under the soleplate.
  5. Still dead? On every model except the DC33 the next step is a new brush bar or cleaner head, not a belt.

What the "belt for Dyson" listings are

You will find belts sold for the DC40, DC41, DC65 and Ball Animal 2. They are small toothed belts for the gearbox inside the cleaner head. Fitting one means taking the sealed head apart, Dyson doesn't support it, and the shop that sells the DC41 one warns that a head that stops turning usually has a different fault. A DC33 clutch belt is different: that is a normal repair on that machine.

How we made this page: for each model we read Dyson's US owner's manual, Dyson's online "brush bar not spinning" troubleshooting and Dyson's spare-parts lists. Anything we found only at independent parts shops or in owner reports is marked as such. We did not take any machine apart for this page. Checked November 2026.
